Choruses. Photo by Norman Gludovatz.
Please join us! New members are welcome to join at
any time. Please note, we will not be rehearsing on February 9, 2010,
because we're performing an outreach concert that night. New members are
encouraged to join us on any other Tuesday, however.
Rehearsals are held at 7:30 PM on every Tuesday (but not Feb. 9)
at St. Margaret's Cedar Cottage Anglican Church, 1530 East 22nd at the
corner of Dumfries Street in Vancouver (close to the intersection of Knight
and Kingsway). [map]
We believe that anything you don't know about singing or reading
music can be learned. Don't let lack of experience or stage fright
deter you. Give us a chance to prove that you aren't tone-deaf after
all!
Our rehearsals are open to anyone interested in becoming an
singing or non-singing member.
We are a non-auditioned choir. You don't have to read music
or have any previous musical experience to sing with us.
We are accessible. Our rehearsals and concerts are held in wheelchair-accessible
buildings.
We are inclusive and welcome gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered,
and straight members.
We are secular. We honor the diversity in our members by choosing
music with little or no religious content.
We welcome new members at any time of the year.
Even if you cannot join the choir this year, please consider dropping
by to sing with us some evening. As a community choir, we are always
looking for friends, allies, and enthusiastic audience members!
Benefits of singing with the VLGC
Voice improvement: Choral singing helps you breathe better
and sound better. Did you know many opera singers have exceptionally
low heart rates?
Musical education: Our Director has extensive training in music
and choral direction.
Creative involvement: Choir members assist with performance
plans. Members may suggest tunes to arrange, composers to commission
and concert themes to pursue. Then there is the writing, illustrating
and designing of the ads, the stage sets... and the list goes on.
Social identity: One never stops coming out of the closet.
It might as well be in two sentences "Which choir?"
"Oh, The Vancouver Lesbian and Gay Choir."
Self knowledge: Getting to know yourself in a new way by getting
to know new people in a creative way.
Other great benefits
Snacks! Someone or other always brings great snacks to rehearsal
night. We are a very snack friendly group.
Make new friends! Joining the choir is a great way to meet people.
Vancouver can be a difficult city for newcomers. Come join our family.
Fun and laughter! Sometimes we have just a little too much fun,
but our director and accompanist are very patient and forbearing with
our boisterousness.
Make magic! Singing in four part harmony feels like magic. You
can feel it right down to your toes!
